Why Do We Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Amarillo?

When thinking about the best place to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Amarillo, it’s important to know who St. Patrick was and why he is honored in the Irish culture and in the State of Texas. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He is recognized by The Church as the man who brought Christianity to Ireland, and by the time of his death on March 17, 461, St. Patrick had established many monasteries, churches, and schools there. Many famous legends grew out of the story of St. Patrick – including, that he drove the snakes out of Ireland and used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. Ireland came to celebrate the anniversary of his death with religious services and feasts.

In the United States, Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th and over the past 200 years or so, the holiday in this country has evolved into a full-on celebration of Irish culture with parades, special foods, music, dancing, drinking and a whole lot of green!

During the 1700s and 1800s, many Irish families migrated west to the United States to flee political and religious persecution by the British. When they arrived as immigrants, many families continued their journey west towards New Spain and what would eventually become Texas to start new lives. Many Irish American families are deeply rooted in the American West, and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations throughout the West can be traced back as far as the 1800s. Today, most major cities throughout the great State of Texas including Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston host elaborate parades and celebrations which include throwing huge parties and dying their rivers green!

And it should be no surprise that the town of Shamrock, TX (yes, it’s a real place), which sits about a hundred miles to the east of Amarillo on Interstate 40 (Old Route 66), holds a tremendous St. Patrick’s Day celebration, which includes a fantastic parade, rodeo, 5K run, carnival, wing eating contest, car show, best beard contest, motorcycle rally and a whole lot more!
